Kieren Walker of Roarton, Lancashire — was a talented art student, living at home with his parents and younger sister, Jem. Shy, socially awkward but deeply kind and caring. He was eighteen when he killed himself. He felt relief.

Less than a month later, in an event which became known as The Rising, Kieren and many other dead returned to the land of the living. It was a one-off event. In that time, the undead terrorised the living — killing and devouring all that they came across, held back mostly by the living who banded together to create the Human Volunteer Force.

Halperin & Weston, a drug company, were able to create the drug Neurotriptyline. It could rebuild brain cells in the dead. Through the capture and treatment of the undead — they were rehabilitated and released back into society, to their families — hereby referred to as Partially Deceased Syndrome or PDS sufferers.

Only not everyone is so pleased to see people like Kieren return — including Kieren himself.
