CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: Kieren Walker.
• Character Age: 18, biologically. 22-23, chronologically.
• Character Canon: In The Flesh.
• Canon Point: Post-S1, Pre-S2.
• Character History:
Kieren Walker grew up in Roarton — a village situated in Lancashire, England — along with his parents and younger sister, Jem. His life was unassuming, mundane. He was somewhat of an outsider compared to his peers and community. Roarton is a staunchly conservative and working-class community, typical of rural communities of Northern England. Kieren was a talented artist, sensitive and kind. He was also in love with his best friend, Rick — something that earned the ire of Rick's father, who banned him from their home for the sake of a mixtape.
However, following the death of Rick in Afghanistan, Kieren fell into despair. Not knowing what else he could do, he took his own life at aged eighteen. A few weeks after his death, an inexplicable freak-act of nature brought those who were recently deceased back to life — a one-off event that would be known as 'The Rising'. This began in Roarton and reached further afield, with an estimated 140,000 dead returning. The undead terrorised the living — killing and devouring all that they came across. While cities in the UK (and particularly the South) had the support of the army and government, rural areas were left to fend for themselves. In places like Roarton, the threat of the undead was held back mostly by the living who banded together to create the Human Volunteer Force.
Through time, Halperin & Weston, a drug company, were able to create the drug Neurotriptyline. It could rebuild brain cells in the dead and restore them from the feral, simplified states they'd been in. Through the capture and treatment of the undead — they were rehabilitated and released back into society, to their families — hereby referred to as Partially Deceased Syndrome or PDS Sufferers. Kieren was one of these, allowed back to his family in Roarton. However, PDS Sufferers were not well received. Many of the rural communities abandoned by the government still felt a great deal of resentment, and even hatred towards PDS Sufferers, the 'Rotters' they once fought, now placed back in their communities they once protected.
Kieren struggles with his return from death and tries to carefully navigate himself; he reconnects with fellow PDS Sufferer Amy, and faces the prospect of Rick returning home, too. But in short, it goes badly. Kieren is soon outed as a PDS Sufferer; he, along with Amy, face the ire of their community. Enough so that Amy chooses to leave Roarton.
There's also the fallout with Rick, who confronts Kieren over his suicide and their relationship, along with Rick's father Bill pushing his son to kill Kieren to put an end to his perceived 'influence' over Rick — seeing Kieren as a monster, but failing to acknowledge the fact that Rick is also a PDS Sufferer. When Rick refuses to hurt Kieren, Bill chooses to kill his son — only realising what he'd done afterwards, when Kieren confronts him. Bill is subsequently killed by another neighbour, in revenge for Bill killing his PDS Sufferer wife earlier in a witch-hunt.
• Character Personality:
— Compassionate: Kieren cares deeply for others, particularly his family and friends. As a younger teenager, he noticed his sister was struggling with self-esteem and confidence issues, even noting how she walked on tip-toes and understanding why she did when their parents failed to. He quietly made Jem a mix-tape filled with rock and metal music and gifted it to her, helping Jem with her confidence through this. He also has a great deal of empathy for his fellow PDS Sufferers, particularly those in untreated states — even fighting to save the lives of two that had been captured despite a gun was pointed at him for trying to defend them, or even going as far as to wipe his cover-up mousse off and take out a contact lens (a big deal to Kieren, who hides his bare face constantly) to show a rabid PDS Sufferer that he was 'one of them'.
— Morality: Kieren does possess a strong moral compass, and is not afraid to speak up for the rights of others, and even does have some qualms in the face of Amy's more free-spirited approach. He calls bullshit out when he sees it. It is particularly shown in those he cares about, when he finally confronted Rick's dad. Even with his complicated feelings about his existence, he chewed Bill Macy out, considering Rick's return as a 'gift' and that he had ruined it by murdering Rick. He even wanted to tell Lisa Lancaster's parents the truth, and was conflicted about going along with Jem's lie that Lisa could 'still be out there' due to Lisa's body never being found.
— Sensitive: Kieren is an academic type through his art, considerate, conscientious and kind. In truth, while Kieren is probably not the most sensitive of people — and is arguable just a decent, emotional human being. But it shines through in his living situation compared to those around him, and he not considered 'a man's man' by others in his community. Roarton is typically a very rural, working-class and poor community — with rigid societal norms that shun those (men) who are different or emotional.
— Pessimistic/Depressive: Perhaps the fact that Kieren took his own life is reason enough to explain his pessimistic world view. Without Rick, he viewed his life as 'everything going to shit' and saw no other way out than to commit suicide. In his second life, he is incredibly morbid and cynical of himself and the world around him. It's also given him a dry, sardonic humour about him — but more aimed at himself than being unkind to others. He tends to push down and swallow a lot of his emotions, and would rather let them fester within him and exist in a quiet, depressive state — but they can boil over at times. Kieren isn't passive because he's depressed, even if it might seem like that when others look at him. He holds a lot of raw emotion in him, and it can explode out of him when he's pushed to it, when he's the most hurt. He screams at Bill Macy for killing his son, a man who he's tried to stay clear of for years, a man who would very likely kill him if he got the chance. It's almost extreme, in a way — probably best illustrated with his suicide: an extreme to his loss and grief.
— Withdrawn: Through his journey of being medicated and returned to society, Kieren is still incredibly withdrawn as he struggles with his new life. He believes himself to be a monster, and no longer fits in the society he grew up in. Ironically, even as a living person, Kieren never saw himself as someone who fit in either. In the harsh, working-class rural life of Roarton, Kieren was artistic, sensitive and queer. With this, Kieren often doesn't address things with his family, and the Walkers as a whole struggle with communication. It takes a long time before Kieren can even broach the elephant in the room: his suicide, and at his current canon point, still can't even speak about his memories of a rabid PDS Sufferer to his family.
— Self-Critical: As a Partially Deceased Syndrome Sufferer, Kieren does not see his rabid state as a free pass for his actions. While he will repeat the manta of 'I am a Partially Deceased Syndrome Sufferer, and what I did in my untreated state was not my fault.' when asked to by doctors/health-care professionals, Kieren's expressions and tone always heavily imply he doesn't quite believe the words, and struggles to voice them aloud. He openly balks at the attitudes of others who believe they 'didn't know what they were doing' and dismiss their actions a simply trying to survive. Instead, Kieren carries a great deal of guilt for his actions, and doesn't want to downplay the fact that he hurt and killed people. He believes he needs to put things right, even if he doesn't know how (or like telling Lisa's parents the truth) and is haunted by his nightmares/hallucinations of his time in his untreated state.

As someone who is undead, Kieren does not feel, does not eat or (he can, but it's very gross/unpleasant) with the exception of brains (which will give him a high). He does sleep, and even dreams. He does not age. His body temperature is room temperature. He will not heal when injured, which includes bone healing. However, even if he does not feel — he will need to take care of his body to ensure it is not damage via injury or frostbite.
